Australia was knocked out of the Women’s Fifa World Cup in the quarter finals. They did pretty well, really good football to watch. Though their defense could go a bit wonky at times. There is talk of potentially a women’s A-League, maybe even next year, which would be awesome. People would definitely watch them, I could see them getting just as much support (if not more) as the netball. I guess that would be sport to learn from, they’re the most successful women’s sporting league in Australia.

A Melbourne team could play at Olympic park, especially now that it’s too small for Melbourne Victory. The Victory fans would adopt the women’s team as their own. There wouldn’t be a split in the fanbase like there would be if they add an extra Melbourne men’s team.

Starting an 8 team women’s league could coincide well with the expansion of the men’s league beyond 8 teams.

Well Australia’s Asian cup campaign has been rocky so far. Their first few games were terrible. Embarrassing even. Yet somehow they managed to scrape through into the finals. Thailand really had a good case for progressing.

Now they’re in for a showdown with Japan, who they kicked out of the World cup last year. Hopefully they can make a game of it. Japan are looking pretty good.

It’s amazing how quickly the media can turn on a team. The moment they aren’t playing well, they disown them. Being a fan means you have to stick with them even when they aren’t doing too good.

The world game really does some bizarre things to your health. Apparently every world cup there is a major spike in heart attacks. There was talk that FIFA should be making health warnings. The Asian cup hasn’t generated that kind of excitement here yet, the Japan game might though. If we get past them things will really get interesting. Hopefully Australia has it’s form back.

I really don’t know why I care so much about Football (soccer), I don’t give a shit about any other football code (or most sport). In fact I actively hate some of them and the meat heads that surround them. I think it’s the fault of my Dad and his West Ham heritage.

I managed to catch the last 5 minutes of the Australia Japan world cup match. It was a pretty spectacular time to see it.

Australia scored 2 goals in that time completing a 3 goals in 10 minutes comeback.

I’m taking it as a sign. I believe in the socceroos.

Seeing those goals made me feel like my exam will go okay, and raise my faith in my archery. Weird eh?

If we can draw against Brazil (heh..) then it might be enough to make it to the final 16

Either way the Croatia game is going to a big big trial.

I feel a little sad for the Japan team. It would have been good to meet them later. They aren’t knocked out yet, but if they don’t win against Croatia they can’t make it to the next round. Even if they win, they will have to draw against Brazil.

I’m expecting Croatia to beat Japan, Brazil winning against everyone, and Australia having to battle Croatia in the final game to fight for the 2nd spot.

It was one of the best matches I’ve seen in ages.

West Ham united has made it to the finals of the FA Cup.

My Dad’s dad went for them and so does my Dad, so that’s why I do. It was their team from back before they immigrated. Traditions are kind of fun. Besides they have charm, they’ve been such an underdog team for so many years. I never follow them but am pleased to hear they are doing so well. I’ve going round to my Dad’s to watch it, it’ll be going way past midnight (being on the other side of the world and all).

It’s also a way of celebrating the fact that Fred would have been 100 this year if he was still around. Quite a milestone.

Lots of things are coming up soon. Assignments, lots of ballets, the Melbourne International Film Festival again.

In other stuff. I’ve been having a stressful few weeks mixed in with some rather good days. I think I even feel like shitting it out into cyber space, but maybe later. Got to go watch an old star trek before the game.

Last night Australia beat Uruguay and qualified for the 2006 soccer world cup in Germany.
It’s the first time Australia has qualified in 32 years.
Just shows to go you that John Saffran getting that curse removed was a good idea.
